Selecting the Best Shampoo for Your Hair Type

When selecting a shampoo and conditioner it is important to take into account your hair type. There are a few main different hair types and there are different shampoos or techniques for each.

Thick Curly or Wavy Hairbest curly hair shampoo

Curly hair is almost always too dry. This is because unlike straight hair, on curly hair the natural oils produced in the scalp have difficulty moving down the hair shaft. To rehydrate the hair creamy moisturizing shampoos are recommended. Some key ingredients to look for are shea butter and coconut, wheat germ and macadamia nut oils. These ingredients coat the hair, holding moisture inside and protecting the hair from breakages.

Fine Oily or Limp Hair

Fine hair is the most likely hair type to appear oily and can start to look like this after only a day. You may need to wash daily but a quick fix if you only want to wash every two days is dry shampoo or talcum powder. They soak up the oils and add body to limp hair. Don’t use creamy shampoos, they will just make your hair oilier faster. Clear shampoos are the go. The key to fine hair shampoos is Panthenol. This is a body building ingredient that penetrates the hair cuticle to make the strand thicker.

Dry, Dull or Damaged Hair

An important issue with dry or damaged hair is washing too often, do not wash every day because the hair gets too dry and is more prone to breakages. Use a creamy, moisturizing shampoo similar to what is used for curly hair, but make sure that it is gentle because you don’t want to further damage dry or damaged hair.

Processed Hair (Permed, Relaxed or Dyed)

The most important factor in keeping processed hair healthy is keeping in moisture. Processed hair can suffer from very dry shafts and tips because the chemicals can affect the strength of the hair but at the same time, oily roots from oil built up. You’ll want to cleanse the roots and moisturize the shafts and tips. Here are some tips for shampooing you hair type:

  • Dyed hair – Listen to your hairstylist when they tell you to use colour protection shampoos. They contain mild cleansers and have ingredients that keep your colour radiant and long lasting.
  • Permed or Relaxed Hair – You need a moisturizing shampoo, and any should work. Apply it to just the roots, rubbing in well, then put your head under the water and massage your hair while the shampoo runs down, removing any dirt and grime. Then make sure that you use conditioner to lock in the moisture, but keep it well away from the roots.
